How Onboard Works

How Onboard turns code into a reliable project guide

Not a chatbot layer on top of source files. Onboard builds a project model first, then uses that model to guide engineers through architecture, workflows, starting points, and deeper code exploration.

01
Analyze
Understand scans the project and extracts relationships, dependencies, references, metrics, and structure.

02
Model
Onboard organizes the analysis into subsystems, workflows, entry points, important files, and change paths.

03
Guide
The model becomes onboarding guidance: architecture summaries, reading paths, and practical starting points.

AI ANALYSIS

One question. Three useful layers of code context.

Ask questions in plain language and get answers grounded in real files, relationships, and call paths from the project model.

No token limits

QUESTION

Ask like a new engineer

Ask what something does, where a workflow starts, or which files matter first.

Project Model

Grounded by the project model

Answers use relationships, references, metrics, and call paths extracted by Understand.

Evidence

See what the answer is based on

Surface files, symbols, relationships, and reports that support the explanation.

Action

Go deeper when needed

Jump from the AI explanation into navigation, reports, call trees, or specific code areas.

Documentation

Documentation that explains the project, not just the product.

Onboard turns the project model into practical documentation engineers can use to understand architecture, workflows, important files, and where to start.

Architecture context

Give engineers the system-level view first

Help new team members understand the major pieces before they start reading source files.

Workflow explanations

Document how behavior moves through the project

Explain request paths, subsystems, and common flows in a format the team can share.

Starting points

Show what to read next

Use the documentation page to point engineers toward important files, entry points, and follow-up exploration.

A living project guide

Use generated documentation pages to explain how the codebase is structured, what engineers should understand first, and where they should go next.

Reports

Reports that show where to look next

Use generated reports to identify important areas of the codebase, review risk signals, and understand where complexity, impact, and project knowledge concentrate.

Deployment

Local control without giving up team access

Onboard is designed for teams that need code intelligence available across the organization while keeping analysis, source, and project context inside their own environment.

01 / OFFLINE

No cloud dependency required

Run in restricted or air-gapped workflows where external code upload is not acceptable.

02 / SHARED

One instance for the team

Give engineers access to the same project model instead of isolated local experiments.

03 / PRACTICAL

No oversized infrastructure project

Deploy with practical hardware expectations rather than a large cloud or GPU cluster.

FAQ

Built for private codebases

Onboard is built for teams that need code intelligence without sending private source code outside their own environment.

AI runs locally
Code never leaves your environment
Self-hosted deployment
Unlimited users and unlimited LOC
Free for qualifying open source and education
Where does the AI run?

Onboard is designed for local AI. The model, prompts, code context, and answers can run inside the customer environment instead of relying on an external AI service.

Does source code leave our environment?

No. Onboard is self-hosted, and source code does not need to be uploaded to SciTools or to a third-party cloud service.

Can everyone on the team access it?

Yes. Onboard is meant to be shared by the engineering team, so developers can work from the same project model rather than isolated local notes or one-off AI sessions.

How is pricing calculated?

Pricing is based on the number of projects covered. Every tier includes unlimited users and unlimited lines of code.

What counts as a project?

A project is the unit OnBoard organizes work around — typically a codebase or repository, even if it spans multiple binaries or libraries. If those binaries and libraries are built and maintained together as a single product, we treat them as one project.

That said, every team's setup is different, and we know "one product" isn't always a clean line. If you're not sure how your codebase should be counted, or you have a use case that doesn't fit neatly into this definition, our sales team can work with you directly to find a fair setup for your situation — just reach out and we'll figure it out together.

How is Onboard different from a chatbot over a repository?

Onboard uses SciTools Understand analysis data, including relationships, references, dependencies, call paths, metrics, and project structure. It is not limited to searching raw source files.

Can I use my own LLM provider (LM Studio, OpenRouter, etc.)?

Onboard isn't locked to a single AI provider. If you'd rather run models locally or route through your own provider, you can point Onboard at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. That covers local runtimes like LM Studio (and similar tools such as Ollama or vLLM) as well as hosted aggregators like OpenRouter that give you access to many models through one API key. Just enter the base URL and API key/model name in Onboard's settings, and it'll use that endpoint instead of the built-in model. This is a good fit for teams that want to keep code analysis fully on their own infrastructure, or that already have model preferences and billing set up elsewhere.

Is it available for open source and education?

Yes. Onboard is free for qualifying open source projects and educational use. Eligibility can be reviewed with SciTools.
